Key Races to Watch

Though just a fraction of the races we are involved with going into the Fall, the ones identified below are a good representation of the types of races PIFPAC is involved in. Polling is extremely tight in each district and candidates on both sides are sure to be well funded.

Senate District 10– This seat is currently held by Senator Bob Wieckowski, who was term- limited, making this an open seat.  PIFPAC is supporting Fremont Mayor Lily Mei who will face Aisha Wahab in the general election. This seat is in the East Bay and covers Alameda and Santa Clara counties, with D +38.5% registration advantage. The district number and the geographic lines of this district did not change significantly.  The district includes Fremont, Hayward, Newark and Union City.

Lily Mei is the first elected woman and Asian American Mayor in Fremont, she previously served on the Fremont Unified School district and has over 20 years of experience as a corporate executive.  She will bring this business experience to the State Senate.

Senate District 38– This seat is currently held by Senator Pat Bates, who is terming out, making this an open seat.  Redistricting changed voter registration here drastically. SD 38 is centered in San Diego and Orange County and has a D +5.58% registration advantage. PIFPAC is supporting small business owner Matt Gunderson who will face Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear.

Matt Gunderson has been a small business owner for over twenty years employing 185 local people.  He understands what is required to be in business for yourself in California.  In the State Senate he wants to focus on affordability and cost of living.  He also has a three-point plan to end homelessness.

Assembly District 40- PIFPAC is supporting incumbent Assemblymember Suzette Valladares against nurse advocate Pilar Schiavo.  AD40 consists of portions of Los Angeles County, including the whole City of Santa Clarita and portions of the City of Los Angeles and has a D+5.06% registration advantage. This district changed significantly with redistricting.

Assemblymember Valladares has engaged with PIFPAC at every opportunity and has displayed an eagerness to learn about insurance.  Before being elected to the State Legislature, Valladares was CEO of Little Steps of Faith, a non-profit providing childcare and preschool to families throughout LA County.  One of her many policy passions is serving children with autism.
